Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed and CHAN 2024/AFCON 2027 Local Organising Committee Chairman Nicholas Musonye have expressed concerns over Nyayo Stadium’s capacity to host international matches involving the national team, Harambee Stars. Their apprehensions follow security breaches during the recent World Cup qualifier against Gabon, where ticketless fans forced entry into the stadium.

President Hussein questioned the suitability of Nyayo Stadium for future high-profile games, suggesting a possible shift to Kasarani Stadium. He emphasized the need for discussions on venue selection, especially with the resurgence of enthusiasm for Kenyan football. Musonye echoed these sentiments, highlighting incidents of fans invading the pitch and underscoring the necessity for improved security measures.

Both officials praised Kasarani Stadium for its superior facilities, including floodlights, excellent pitch conditions, and well-equipped dressing rooms. They noted that Nyayo Stadium’s reduced capacity, from 35,000 to 22,000, further limits its adequacy for hosting significant matches. The FKF aims to enhance the match-day experience and ensure safety by potentially relocating future national team engagements to more suitable venues.
