The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has named Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Odinga as its interim party leader following the passing of his brother and party founder, Raila Amolo Odinga.
The decision was reached early Thursday morning during a special sitting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), convened just hours before Raila’s body was set to arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at 9:30 a.m.
In a statement issued after the meeting, ODM confirmed that Oburu’s appointment takes immediate effect. “The National Executive Committee (NEC) has this morning met and unanimously endorsed the designation of the Senator of Siaya County, Dr. Oburu Oginga, as the Acting Party Leader. This appointment takes effect immediately,” the statement read.
Speaking after the session, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir announced that condolence books had been opened in all ODM offices across the country, allowing Kenyans to pay tribute to Raila Odinga. He also invited the public to view the late leader’s body, which will lie in state at Parliament Buildings from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Nassir assured supporters that the party would remain united and resilient despite the loss of its iconic leader. “ODM remains strong and together, just as it was under the leadership of Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga. We are bound by the spirit of unity, democracy, and continuity the ideals he lived for,” he said.
He added that Oburu’s appointment was an interim measure as the party prepares for a formal election to choose a substantive leader. “The NEC has designated Senator Dr. Oburu Odinga to serve as acting party leader until such a time when the party’s top organs convene to elect a successor worthy of the legacy left behind,” Nassir explained.
Raila’s passing on Wednesday morning in India has plunged the country into mourning. President William Ruto has since announced that the late former Prime Minister will be accorded a state funeral, with a national committee chaired by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki tasked with overseeing the arrangements.
