Tension gripped Thika Town on Sunday morning after a police officer shot and killed two boda boda riders following a confrontation near Makongeni Police Station.

The incident stemmed from a minor road accident involving the officer who was driving his private vehicle and a motorcyclist with a passenger. Although no injuries were reported, the officer blamed the rider for reckless riding and drove away from the scene.

Other boda boda operators, angered by his attempt to leave, pursued and intercepted him a few meters ahead. According to witnesses, the officer, feeling surrounded and threatened, drew his firearm and opened fire, killing two riders instantly.

Panic erupted as the crowd dispersed, only to regroup moments later. In retaliation, the riders pelted the officer with stones before torching his Audi saloon car. Police officers arrived at the scene but were unable to save the vehicle, which was reduced to ashes.

The officer was later disarmed and placed in custody at Makongeni Police Station as investigations commenced.

Meanwhile, boda boda operators in the area staged protests demanding justice for their slain colleagues. Kiambu County Police Commander Doris Mugambi confirmed the incident and appealed for calm, urging riders to allow due process to take its course.

“We understand the anger, but we ask riders not to take the law into their own hands. Investigations are ongoing and appropriate action will be taken,” Mugambi said.
