Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Saturday hosted Tanzanian opposition leaders in Nairobi for high-level discussions on democracy and governance in Africa.

The talks, led by Chadema party chairman Tundu Lissu, focused on strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring effective political participation both in government and opposition.

Raila Urges Dialogue, Transparent Elections

Speaking after the meeting, Raila emphasized the need for constructive engagement between opposition parties and the ruling government, urging Tanzanian leaders to prioritize dialogue for the good of their nation.

He also expressed hope for a free, fair, and transparent election in Tanzania’s upcoming polls, set for October 2025, where opposition candidates will face off against incumbent President Samia Suluhu.

Tanzanian Opposition Stands Firm on ‘No Reform, No Election’

Lissu and his delegation reaffirmed their commitment to electoral justice, insisting on their “No Reform, No Election” stance.

They noted that the meeting with Raila provided an opportunity to discuss Tanzania’s political situation and the democratic struggle led by Chadema. Lissu, who was elected Chadema party chairman in January 2025, briefed Raila on the ongoing battle for reforms in Tanzania’s electoral system, highlighting the party’s position ahead of the critical 2025 elections.

Tanzania’s Political Landscape: A Tough Battle Ahead

Tanzania has been ruled by Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) since independence, making it one of Africa’s longest-ruling parties. However, opposition leaders are pushing for electoral reforms before engaging in another contest.

Lissu, who ran against the late President John Magufuli in 2020 and finished second, is now preparing to challenge President Samia Suluhu, Magufuli’s former deputy.

With the opposition calling for reforms and international scrutiny on Tanzania’s electoral process increasing, all eyes will be on the October 2025 elections to determine whether the country will witness a true democratic shift or another CCM-dominated poll.
