President William Ruto has lauded former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for putting aside political rivalry in favor of national unity, framing their cooperation as a new chapter in Kenya’s journey toward inclusive development and reconciliation.
Speaking during the funeral of Odinga’s former aide in Siaya County, the President used the solemn occasion to urge leaders across the political divide to abandon divisive rhetoric and work together for the good of the nation.
“In the same way I stood with you when you needed a man, you have equally stood with me when I needed a man to stand with me,” President Ruto said in a rare show of camaraderie with Odinga. He praised the opposition leader’s decision to partner with the government, describing it as an act of patriotism. “Odinga resolved to set aside his own interests to work with me for the greater good of the country.”
The President’s tone reflected a broader shift toward reconciliation, positioning national interest above personal or tribal politics. “We must get rid of politics of division and negative ethnicity. It’s possible for us to have a nation that can benefit all of us,” he said, urging other leaders to emulate Odinga’s example.
Ruto pointed to Kenya’s historical struggles with ethnic divisions and political polarization, lamenting that such politics has long stalled development in many regions. “Divisive politics is to blame for underdevelopment in some parts of the country,” he said.
He further called on all political leaders to prioritize unity and progress. “We can no longer afford to let tribalism dictate our future. Let’s work together as one people.”
In addition to his call for unity, the President outlined key milestones of his administration in infrastructure, energy, and agriculture sectors he said are helping turn around the economy. He noted that inflation was dropping and the Kenyan shilling had stabilized, signs of an economy on the rebound.
“We are connecting every part of the country with electricity. Before, it was the preserve of the rich at the expense of vulnerable Kenyans,” he added, underscoring efforts to ensure equitable development across all regions.
