Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi and other leaders were stopped from addressing the congregation at PCEA Githaithi Church in Githunguri on Sunday, April 13. The church was holding a fundraiser for a new building, but presiding bishop Peter Kinyanjui said there would be no political speeches during the service.
“As you have seen in the country in recent months, the PCEA church was in fact among the first to say that politicians should not speak at the pulpit,” said the bishop.
He explained that politicians often bring up other issues that take away from the church message. “For example, if I bring out Sudi, he will speak on other issues, and the church sermon will be forgotten,” he added.
The bishop also warned politicians not to use the church to publicise their donations or promises. Despite this, Sudi was seen talking to the bishop, possibly asking for a chance to speak.
He was later given a brief opportunity and admitted, “The ban on politicians from speaking in church was largely our own doing.”
