President William Ruto on Monday unveiled a major milestone in Kenya’s journey toward becoming a global technology hub, commissioning the first phase of infrastructure and smart city facilities at Konza Technopolis the country’s flagship smart city project.
The launch marked a new chapter in Kenya’s digital transformation, under the theme “Powering Kenya’s Future: A Smart City Open for Investment.”
The President inaugurated several state-of-the-art developments that now make Konza operationally ready as a hub for innovation, research, and sustainable urban living. Among the completed projects are 40 kilometers of modern roads, 170 kilometers of water and drainage systems, 6 kilometers of underground utility tunnels carrying fibre-optic cables, and a 120MW smart power substation designed to support the city’s high-tech ecosystem.
Ruto also officially opened the Solid Waste Collection Facility, hailed as the first of its kind in East and Central Africa, and the Silicon Savannah Intelligent Operations and Experience Centre, which demonstrates how smart city technologies are integrated into Konza’s infrastructure.
In addition, the President laid the foundation stone for the Konza Affordable Housing Project, which will deliver 10,000 modern homes with community amenities complementing the 3,000 units already under construction. This aligns with the government’s Affordable Housing agenda, aimed at expanding access to modern living spaces while creating new job opportunities for local residents.
The commissioning ceremony drew dignitaries and stakeholders from across Kenya, including leaders from Makueni, Kajiado, and Machakos counties, senior government officials, corporate and diplomatic representatives, and potential investors all signaling strong confidence in Konza’s potential to drive Kenya’s knowledge-based economy.
