Teachers across Kenya are set to benefit from a significant salary increase following the signing of a new five-year Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and key education unions.
The agreement, covering the 2025–2029 period, was finalized after intense negotiations held on Friday, July 18, at the Kenya Institute of Special Education in Kasarani. Present were representatives from the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) and the Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET).
Valued at Ksh33 billion, the new deal includes salary adjustments aimed at improving the welfare of teachers across all job groups. Those in the highest job group, D5, will now earn up to Ksh167,415 a five percent increase while teachers in lower grades will see even more substantial gains.
The lowest-paid teachers, currently earning approximately Ksh23,000 per month, will receive a 29.6 percent salary increase, raising their monthly earnings to about Ksh29,000. These adjustments will be phased in annually, with an annual allocation of Ksh8.4 billion set aside to meet the rising wage bill, culminating in the full implementation by June 30, 2029.
The TSC confirmed that implementation of the new salary structure begins immediately, with teachers expected to receive updated pay slips by the end of the current month.
The new agreement marks a major milestone in efforts to enhance teacher motivation and retention, as well as improve the overall quality of education delivery in the country.
