Arsenal have officially completed the signing of Chelsea winger Noni Madueke in a deal reportedly worth £48 million, potentially rising to £52 million with performance-based add-ons.
The 23-year-old England international has signed a five-year contract at the Emirates Stadium, becoming the latest addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad ahead of the new Premier League season. Madueke is expected to provide depth and competition on the wings, primarily supporting Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.
Despite the club’s enthusiasm, the move has stirred controversy among Arsenal fans. A section of the fanbase has questioned the valuation of the deal, with over 5,000 supporters reportedly signing a petition titled “No to Madueke.” The backlash even spilled onto the streets, as some murals outside the Emirates Stadium were defaced with slogans reading “Arteta Out.”
Madueke’s transfer required him to exit Chelsea’s Club World Cup campaign in the United States last week in order to complete a medical and finalise the terms with Arsenal.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, however, praised the new signing’s potential and immediate value to the team.
“Noni is an exciting and powerful young player. His performances and numbers have been consistently impressive in recent seasons,” said Arteta. “At just 23, he brings both domestic and international experience. He’s someone we’ve watched closely, and we’re thrilled to welcome him to Arsenal.”
Arteta also pointed to Madueke’s existing connections within the England national team setup and the Arsenal squad as a factor that will help ease his transition.
Madueke, who joined Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven in early 2023, has shown flashes of brilliance but struggled to establish himself as a regular starter at Stamford Bridge. His move to Arsenal represents both a fresh opportunity and a significant show of faith from Arteta and the Arsenal board.
Time will tell whether the winger can meet the expectations set by his price tag and silence critics as he begins a new chapter in North London.
