The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is set to revolutionize tax compliance through digital innovation, making it easier for businesses, especially Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), to meet their tax obligations seamlessly. This move aligns with the Authority’s broader strategy to integrate technology-driven solutions that enhance efficiency and foster economic growth.
KRA Board Chairman Nderitu Mureithi and Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga emphasized that streamlining tax processes is key to reducing the compliance burden on businesses. By leveraging digital platforms, KRA aims to minimize bureaucratic hurdles and create a more enabling business environment.
“The complexities of PAYE returns often create administrative burdens and discourage compliance. Our aim is to simplify this process, making it more user-friendly for all employers, including Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs),” stated Commissioner General Wattanga.
The Authority’s forthcoming digital PAYE return system will introduce multiple filing options, such as an Excel-based return, a mobile application, a web-based platform, and API integration. These digital innovations will provide employers with greater flexibility and efficiency in fulfilling their tax obligations, ensuring smoother interactions with KRA’s systems.
Beyond tax simplification, KRA is also strengthening its collaboration with the business community to promote fair trade practices. The Authority is calling on business owners to support efforts in curbing counterfeit products, fostering a transparent and competitive market for all enterprises.
“We are actively engaging stakeholders to understand their challenges and identify solutions. Our open-door policy ensures that taxpayers are heard and supported in meeting compliance requirements,” said Mureithi.
Micro and Small Enterprise Authority (MSEA) Board Chairman James Mureu lauded KRA’s commitment to improving the business environment, particularly through the establishment of a dedicated department addressing MSME concerns.
“We are on the right track. It is encouraging to see KRA working closely with MSMEs, listening to their concerns, and taking steps to create a conducive business environment,” said Mureu.
