Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has pushed back against accusations linking him to violent disruptions during recent demonstrations in the city, describing the claims as “malicious, baseless, and politically motivated.”

In a strongly worded statement, Sakaja broke his silence amid growing speculation on social media and in political circles, asserting that he has never endorsed or participated in violence throughout his public service journey.

“Throughout my political life, I’ve stood for clean politics Siasa Safi. I have never used thuggery or intimidation as a tool to gain power,” the Governor said, adding that the recent claims were part of a calculated smear campaign.

According to Sakaja, a group of political operatives, driven by desperation, orchestrated the hiring of individuals to cause chaos and frame the county government. He alleged that some of the individuals involved were dressed in Nairobi County-linked gear, such as Dishi na County branded accessories, to create a false association with his administration.

“This is a recycled playbook. It’s not new. Just like in past eras where political saboteurs dressed supporters in rival colours to incite public anger today, they’re using county branding to deceive the public,” he noted.

The Governor confirmed that he had engaged law enforcement agencies to ensure that peaceful protests remain protected and that no citizen is subjected to violence, regardless of their political stand.

“Violence is not democracy. Law and order must prevail in this city. We will uphold the Constitution and protect every Nairobian,” he said.

Addressing Nairobians directly, Sakaja urged residents to be cautious and resist manipulation by what he called “rogue politicians clinging to chaos as a survival strategy.”

“My administration remains transparent and accountable. We are building a city that listens not one that rules by fear or misinformation,” he added.

Sakaja also criticized those using the recent protests for political capital, warning that the strategy not only undermines public trust but also insults the legitimate pain of young people seeking justice.

“It’s unfortunate that some are exploiting the tragedy of our youth for headlines. Their actions cheapen genuine calls for justice and distract from the real issues,” he said.

In the wake of the protests, which were sparked by the controversial death of blogger Albert Ojwang’ in police custody, the Governor reiterated his support for due process. He cited the County Government’s cooperation in previous cases, including the release of key CCTV footage from Mbagathi Hospital that helped investigators trace the events leading to Ojwang’s death.

Sakaja also pointed to his administration’s role in facilitating peaceful assembly in the past by providing ambulances, public spaces, and health services to support youth-led initiatives.

“We support the right to protest, but we must draw a line between genuine civic engagement and calculated efforts to stir unrest,” he said.

As investigations into recent disturbances continue, Sakaja called on security agencies to bring the real culprits to justice and reaffirmed his commitment to a safer, freer, and more accountable Nairobi.
