The Ministry of Health has launched an investigation into a possible unidentified illness in Mombasa’s Migadini area, following the deaths of four people under unexplained circumstances.

The alarm was first raised by the Mombasa County Department of Health, which reported the fatalities to the national government. In response, a team of investigators has been dispatched to the affected neighborhood to assess the situation on the ground and engage with community members.

Although no conclusive evidence of an infectious disease has been found so far, health officials are treating the situation with caution. The Ministry has issued a set of safety guidelines, urging residents to stay vigilant and cooperate with community health promoters and local leaders.

Residents have been advised to report any missing persons, suspicious deaths, or unusual symptoms. The Ministry is also cautioning against handling human remains and encouraging the public to maintain strict personal hygiene frequent handwashing with soap or the use of alcohol-based sanitisers is recommended. Anyone feeling unwell has been urged to seek immediate medical attention.

Witnesses in Migadini say the victims were discovered in their homes, with their bodies showing disturbing features such as boil-like sores, skin darkening and peeling, a foul smell, and in some cases, early decomposition.

According to government reports, the deaths occurred between July 9 and July 14, 2025. Preliminary details released by health officials are as follows:

  • On July 9, a 91-year-old woman died at her residence. While the cause of death remains uncertain, community reports suggest she had a chronic illness and was in poor health due to old age.
  • On July 14, three more individuals were found deceased in separate homes. One of the victims was a 57-year-old man who had been receiving ongoing treatment for multiple chronic conditions at Port-Reitz Sub-County Hospital.
  • Also found on the same day was a 69-year-old man, whose body was already showing signs of decomposition. He was reported to have been living with asthma.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely. Investigations into the cause of death and the possibility of a new or rare illness are ongoing, with more information expected in the coming days.
