With determination in their hearts and the Kenyan flag held high, the national women’s netball team fondly known as the Divas touched down in Dubai on Friday, ready to make their mark at the inaugural UAE Netball Cup.
Set to kick off on Sunday, the week-long tournament (June 15–21) will unfold at the Sheikh Rashid bin Hamdan Indoor Stadium at Al Nasr Club. Kenya joins a global mix of competitors, including Namibia, Singapore, UAE, the Republic of Ireland, and the United States each eyeing glory in a round-robin showdown.
Kenya’s opening clash is no small feat they face off against top-seeded Namibia, ranked 18th globally. But for the Divas, ranked 25th and rising, this is more than just a game. It’s a statement of intent.
“This tournament is a game-changer for us,” said Netball Kenya President Immaculate Kavutha, proudly calling the team’s participation a breakthrough moment. “It’s part of the global ranking circuit and proves how far this team has come, with the full support of the Kenyan government behind them.”
Much of that progress is credited to head coach Mugisha Ali of Uganda, who has transformed the team’s trajectory since taking the reins. In just a few years, the Divas have climbed from 40th to 25th in world rankings, and Ali believes the best is yet to come.
“These women are not just athletes—they’re warriors,” said Ali. “They’ve trained relentlessly for weeks and are hungry to prove themselves on the international stage.”
Team captain Parin Simiyu echoed that drive. “We’re not here to participate we’re here to conquer,” she said with a smile. “This is about lifting the UAE Cup, making Kenya proud, and moving up the world rankings.”
The tournament is only one step in a much bigger journey. Millicent Busolo, Secretary General of the Netball Kenya Federation, confirmed that the Divas are slated to compete in upcoming international tournaments in Malawi, Zimbabwe, and Trinidad & Tobago. These events are key stepping stones on their path to the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
As the Divas gear up for their first match, their energy, belief, and national pride are undeniable. Whether you’re a netball fan or a patriot cheering from home, one thing is clear: the Divas have already won hearts and they’re ready to chase history.
