Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has heaped praise on former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, acknowledging his immense contribution to Kenya’s political landscape despite having abandoned him in the 2027 presidential race to support President William Ruto.

Speaking during an Iftar dinner hosted by Raila in Upperhill, Kingi described the ODM leader as a selfless politician whose love for the people is unmatched. He stated that Raila has always prioritized the welfare of Kenyans over personal interests.
“It’s very refreshing once again to sit by the side of Baba (Raila Odinga) and just tap his wisdom. Baba, your love for the people is unparalleled in this country,” Kingi remarked.
Kingi went on to credit Raila for mentoring and shaping his political career, likening him to former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger, who was known for transforming little-known players into stars.
“For the many years I have worked with Raila, he never cared about how famous or unknown one was. If he saw potential in you, he would nurture you into a leader. I am a living testimony,” Kingi stated, recalling how Raila identified his potential in 2007, helped him rise in politics, and even made him a Cabinet Minister.

However, Kingi’s glowing tribute comes after he dealt Raila a major political betrayal in 2027. After years of enjoying ODM’s support and serving as Kilifi Governor under the party’s ticket, he defected to Ruto’s camp, aligning himself with Kenya Kwanza and securing the Senate Speaker position through his Pamoja African Alliance (PAA) party.
His move was seen as a significant defection from ODM, considering his long-standing loyalty to Raila. Many within the opposition viewed it as a self-serving political strategy rather than ideological realignment.
Despite his defection, Kingi acknowledged Raila’s influence on his career, even suggesting that any leader mentored by the former Prime Minister who failed to succeed had no one to blame but themselves.
“Anybody who has gone through his hands and has not become a star, shida ni yako,” Kingi stated.
While his words paint a picture of admiration and gratitude, his actions in 2027 tell a different story one of shifting alliances in the ever-unpredictable world of Kenyan politics.
