Kenya’s tennis sensation Angela Okutoyi is setting her sights on the ongoing FISU World University Games in Germany not just as a stage to shine, but as a vital preparation ground for the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup scheduled for August 4–11 in Namibia.
The two-time African Games gold medallist and reigning three-time Kenya Open champion sees the competition in Germany as a springboard for bigger success.
“This tournament comes at the right time,” said Okutoyi, who is seeded ninth in the FISU Games draw. “After two months of solid matches in France and Germany on a different surface I feel sharper, stronger, and mentally ready. These games are exactly what I need to fine-tune my form before Namibia.”
Representing Auburn University and Team Kenya, Okutoyi knows the challenge ahead is tough. Among her rivals are top-ranked university athletes like China’s Xinxin Yao and Russian stars Alevtina Ibragimova and Polina Latcenko.
Still, her focus remains unshaken.
“It’s a big stage with elite players from around the world, but I’m staying grounded. I’ll take it match by match and give my best. My aim is to go as far as I can in the tournament,” she said.
Team Kenya coach Thuku Rogoi echoed her optimism, noting the team’s commitment and progress. “The players have prepared well and shown remarkable growth. I’m confident in their ability to compete at this level,” said Rogoi.
Kenya is keen on earning promotion from Group III to Group II at the Billie Jean King Cup, and Okutoyi’s form will be pivotal in achieving that goal.
Alongside Okutoyi, the provisional women’s squad features Cynthia Cheruto, Alicia Owegi, Stacy Yego, Melissa Mwakha, Selina Ahoya, and Nancy Kawira. The final four players who will represent Kenya in Namibia will be named at the end of the month.
