The Kenya Wildlife Service has successfully secured two lionesses that strayed from Nairobi National Park into Sholinke Market in Rongai, ending hours of tension among residents.
The big cats were located and safely returned to their pride on Wednesday, January 7, following a coordinated operation involving KWS rangers, veterinary officers and members of the local community. The search, which continued late into the night, combined foot patrols and vehicle tracking across the Rongai area.
KWS said it relied on modern conservation tools to trace the animals, including the EarthRanger monitoring system and drone surveillance, which provided real-time intelligence across a wide terrain. The technology proved crucial in pinpointing the lionesses’ movements and ensuring their safe recovery without harm to people or wildlife.
The wildlife agency praised community cooperation during the operation and reassured the public of continued vigilance to prevent similar incidents.
