Mathare United have rung the changes ahead of the 2025/26 FKF Premier League campaign, parting ways with eight players in what appears to be a bold reset for the club.
The Nairobi-based outfit made the announcement via Facebook on Tuesday, framing the move as part of efforts to reinforce key departments after a lukewarm 10th-place finish last season. Head coach John Kamau seems to be reworking his blueprint, and some familiar names are now on the way out.
Among the most eye-catching exits is Eugene Mukangula. The former AFC Leopards captain, who joined Mathare midway through last season, offered much-needed experience and composure in midfield. Though his stint was brief, his influence during the club’s transitional period didn’t go unnoticed.
Also leaving is reliable fullback Erickson Mulu, a consistent performer who often balanced defensive duties with attacking support. His departure, like the others, comes at the end of his contract.
In a surprising shake-up between the posts, goalkeepers Steve Njunge and Michael Wanyika have both been released. Njunge arrived from Nairobi City Stars while Wanyika was signed from Ulinzi Stars, and while their performances were steady, the club seems ready to revamp its goalkeeping options entirely.
The list of departees also includes midfielder Daniel Odhiambo, who had previously played for Kibera Black Stars, as well as Starlon Odhiambo, Henry Oballa, and Godfrey Rabar.
While Mathare haven’t detailed who’s coming in, this wave of exits signals a club aiming for a fresh start with an eye clearly on climbing the table in the new season.
