The brazen killing of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were in Nairobi has ignited a national outcry, intensifying calls for swift justice and accountability from state security and investigative agencies. Leaders from various political factions, civil society, and the public at large are now demanding immediate and transparent action from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and other arms of government.

Were was shot dead by unknown assailants on Thursday, a move described by colleagues as a “well-coordinated execution” rather than a random act of violence. His death has reignited concerns about the country’s unresolved political assassinations and perceived state inertia in tackling such crimes.

During a solemn gathering at the late MP’s home in Kasipul constituency, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, Senator Moses Kajwang, and National Assembly Minority Whip Millie Odhiambo criticized what they termed as a worrying trend of impunity, calling on authorities to deliver justice with urgency.

The leaders pressed for the retrieval of CCTV footage from the area of the incident and demanded that suspects be brought to book before Were’s burial.

Meanwhile, Kabondo Kasipul MP Eve Obara and Teso North MP Okuu Kaunya echoed the need for expedited investigations, stating that any delay would only heighten public suspicion and distrust in the justice system.

The tragedy has cast a shadow over the country’s political climate, with renewed scrutiny on the safety of public officials and the effectiveness of the security apparatus. It also puts Kenya Kwanza’s pledge for a transparent, accountable government to the test especially in light of recent cooperation agreements with opposition leaders.

As the nation mourns, the handling of this case may well define the state’s commitment to justice and the future of bipartisan collaboration in the country’s governance.
