After months of watching from the sidelines, Raila Odinga is stepping back into the heart of the streets that shaped his political legacy.

The seasoned opposition leader and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) boss has announced he will personally attend the Saba Saba rally at Kamukunji Grounds on Monday, July 7, marking a symbolic return to the frontline of civic resistance.

“This is about honouring the struggle. We return to Kamukunji where it all began to remember the lives lost 35 years ago,” Raila declared during a media appearance.

His statement signals a dramatic shift from his earlier hands-off approach to recent youth-led protests, where he chose to remain largely in the background, offering moral backing but no physical presence. He had previously stated that although he supported the Gen Z movement’s call for accountability, he would not be joining them in the streets.

Now, that position has changed.

By choosing to show up at Kamukunji, a site steeped in the history of Kenya’s democratic struggle, Raila not only aligns himself with a new generation of activists but also reclaims his place as a central figure in Kenya’s protest tradition.

As he returns to the ground that once echoed with the chants of a liberation movement, the political landscape is once again bracing for the familiar presence of a man whose name has long been synonymous with resistance.
