A midnight crash along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa highway has left one man dead and another injured after a Ford Ranger collided with a trailer in Machakos County.

The accident happened at around 12:20am on Monday near Primarosa area, Athi River. Police identified the deceased as Dennis Kasyoki, who was driving the Ford Ranger. His passenger, James Mwangangi Mulatya, survived with injuries and was rushed to Shalom Community Hospital after complaining of severe body pain.

According to a police report, the Ranger was headed towards Nairobi when it attempted to overtake a Mercedes Actros trailer ferrying a container of used shoes from Mombasa to Congo. The pick-up cut in too sharply, striking the trailer’s rear. Both vehicles veered off the road before the container toppled and crashed onto the Ranger, killing Kasyoki on the spot.

The trailer driver, identified as Abdullahi Ouru Hillow, escaped unhurt.

Traffic officers from Athi River Police Station cordoned off the scene and began clearance operations. By press time, the wreckage of both vehicles was still at the site.

Investigations are underway to establish the exact circumstances that led to the fatal crash.
