Kenya’s envoy to Belgium, Prof. Bitange Ndemo, is set to take the helm at the University of Nairobi following his appointment as the institution’s next Vice Chancellor.
The announcement was made by the University Council in a formal communication dated May 5, 2025, confirming that Prof. Ndemo will step into the role once he concludes his diplomatic service in Brussels. In the interim, the Council has designated Prof. Francis Jackim Mulaa as Acting Vice Chancellor for a period of six months, ensuring continued leadership at the university.
According to the Council’s letter, signed by Chairperson Prof. Amukowa Anangwe, the temporary appointment is aimed at preventing a leadership gap following the conclusion of Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson’s term as Acting VC.
“This interim measure ensures seamless administrative continuity as Prof. Ndemo transitions from his ambassadorial responsibilities back to Kenya,” the Council noted.
Prof. Ndemo, a respected scholar, technocrat, and public servant, is expected to bring to the university a wealth of experience from both government and academia. His return to the local higher education scene is being closely watched by education stakeholders, with expectations that he will steer the institution through its ongoing reforms and strategic transformation.
