Boda boda operators and traders at Tala Market in Matungulu, Machakos County, have raised alarm over deteriorating sanitation conditions, blaming the county government for failing to manage waste collection.

Speaking to Mbaitu FM, the traders lamented that piles of uncollected garbage have taken over parts of the market, creating an unbearable stench and attracting flies. The waste, which includes decomposing food remains and plastic waste, has made it difficult for both traders and customers to operate safely.

“The situation is out of control. The garbage keeps piling up, and no one is doing anything about it. We are worried about diseases like cholera and typhoid because the environment is now a health hazard,” said one of the traders.

Boda boda riders who operate within the market also expressed frustration, saying the poor conditions are affecting their businesses. According to them, the foul smell and dirty surroundings discourage customers from coming to the market, reducing their daily earnings.

“We are forced to work in these conditions every day. It is not just uncomfortable but also dangerous to our health. The county government has completely failed us,” lamented one boda boda operator.

County Government Accused of Neglect

Traders and residents have accused the Machakos County Government of failing in its responsibility to maintain cleanliness in markets. They say despite paying market fees, waste collection remains irregular, leaving the marketplace in a deplorable state.

“We pay for these services, yet the county government is not doing its job. Where does our money go? This is pure negligence, and we are demanding immediate action,” another trader stated angrily.

They are now calling on the county officials responsible for market sanitation to visit the site and address the issue before a health crisis erupts.

So far, county health and sanitation officials have remained silent despite the growing concerns. Residents are now demanding urgent intervention, warning that if the situation is not resolved soon, they will take action, including staging protests to force the government to act.
