The long-awaited Mombasa Commuter Rail Service is set to officially launch on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, with President William Ruto expected to commission the project.

The service will connect passengers arriving at the Mombasa SGR Terminus in Miritini directly to the city’s Central Business District (CBD), cutting down the nearly 14-kilometre stretch that has long posed a challenge for travellers.

Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) says the project is designed to provide fast, reliable, and convenient transport for thousands of passengers daily, with “Park and Ride” and “Drop and Ride” options to enhance accessibility. The commuter trains will make scheduled stops at Miritini, Changamwe West, Changamwe East, Shimanzi, Mazeras, before terminating at the Mombasa CBD.

During an inspection on September 5, 2025, Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir said the service is expected to handle up to 4,000 commuters per day once operational, underlining the government’s push to improve public transport efficiency.

The Ksh.4.2 billion project, completed in August 2025, features new passenger stations in Mombasa town and Miritini, upgrades to 16.6 kilometres of metre-gauge railway, and a 2.3-kilometre bridge across the Makupa Causeway an engineering highlight aimed at easing connectivity into the city.

The launch is seen as a game-changer for the Coast region, providing a seamless link between the Madaraka Express and Mombasa’s city centre, while also boosting economic activity through improved commuter mobility.
