The Senate this morning opens what promises to be a tense three-day hearing that will determine the political fate of Kericho Governor Dr. Erick Kipkoech Mutai.

Mutai faces accusations of gross constitutional violations, abuse of office, and misconduct charges that, if upheld, could see him removed from office.

The process begins behind closed doors, with senators holding a pre-hearing meeting before the proceedings move into the chamber. There, the charges will be formally read, and the governor will be asked to enter a plea guilty or not guilty.

From there, the battle lines are clear: the Kericho County Assembly, which voted to impeach Mutai, will present its evidence first, laying out the case for his removal. His defense team will then get its turn, challenging the claims and seeking to dismantle the accusations point by point.

Once the submissions are done, senators will debate the motion before delivering a final verdict on Friday a vote that could either cement Mutai’s downfall or hand him a political reprieve.

For the embattled governor, the stakes could not be higher. It is the second time in less than a year that Mutai has been dragged before the Senate on impeachment charges, a reminder of the deep divisions and political turbulence surrounding his leadership in Kericho.
