Super Metro Sacco’s operations have once again come to a halt after the Transport Licensing Appeals Board exposed glaring internal failures in driver vetting and vehicle safety triggering renewed public concern over accountability in the matatu sector.

In its ruling, the tribunal reinstated the suspension of the sacco’s services, pending compliance with directives issued by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in March.

“In the interim, pending compliance with the respondent’s directive dated 18th March 2025, the suspension of the appellant’s operations is hereby reinstated,” the board stated.

Among the most alarming findings: 269 drivers lacked proper qualifications, while 42 others had been flagged for repeated speeding offences. The board has directed that all implicated drivers be subjected to fresh testing at the Likoni Driver Testing Centre.

Further compounding the issue, 31 vehicles under the sacco were found to have failed compliance inspections and must now undergo reevaluation at designated inspection centres.

Tribunal Chairman Adrian Kamotho underscored the scale of the problem: “The importance of upholding stringent safety and qualification standards across public transport operators cannot be overstated.”
