Police clashed with University of Nairobi students on Wednesday, September 3, after a protest over delayed exam results turned chaotic along University Way.
The demonstrations, led by medical school students, began peacefully with chants and marches near the university’s main campus. Students accused the administration of withholding their grades, with some claiming missing marks have barred them from progressing academically or preparing for graduation scheduled in two weeks.
The situation escalated when students blocked the busy road with stones and lit bonfires, bringing traffic to a standstill. Police officers moved in to disperse the crowd using tear gas, sparking a standoff as some students hurled stones in retaliation.
“We sat for exams in April, and to date we have no results. Graduation is around the corner, yet we cannot even apply for opportunities because we have no transcripts,” said Emmanuel Keboi Oribo, Chairperson of UNSA’s Faculty of Health Sciences. He insisted the strike would continue until all results are released, warning that normal university activities would remain paralysed.
The university administration is yet to issue a statement on the matter. The protest follows an earlier threat of industrial action announced by the University of Nairobi Students Association in August, which had been temporarily suspended.
