The United Opposition has moved to distance itself from Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, strongly condemning his controversial remarks regarding the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a statement issued by coalition spokesperson Mukhisa Kituyi, the opposition bloc dismissed Kahiga’s comments as insensitive and disrespectful, while also clarifying that the governor is not associated with any of their member parties.
“For clarity, Governor Mutahi Kahiga was elected on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket and has no ties to the United Opposition or any political party within our coalition,” the statement read.
The opposition further accused the ruling UDA party of failing to rein in its leaders who make divisive and inflammatory remarks during a period of national mourning.
Kahiga sparked outrage earlier this week after a video surfaced of him speaking at a funeral, appearing to suggest that Raila’s death would politically benefit the Mt. Kenya region. He also claimed that the former Prime Minister’s political partnership with President William Ruto had shifted government development priorities toward the Nyanza region.
The remarks have drawn widespread criticism from across the political divide, with leaders and citizens alike calling for restraint and respect as the country mourns one of its most influential figures.
