Police said the incident happened when the suspected terrorists attacked vehicles travelling towards Mokowe in the Milihoi area.

Police and witnesses said they fired semiautomatic weapons/assault riffles at the vehicle leading to the deaths in the Tuesday morning incident.

This is the latest such incident to happen in the area amid police operations to address the menace.

Police said they had sent a response team to track the gang.

Early this month, the government said up to 60 terrorists involved in an attack in the area were killed.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said the attackers had all been neutralised by security officers in an operation.

“All the people who attacked our people yesterday have been neutralised, all of them,” Kindiki told Members of Parliament on August 2.

The attackers suspected to be members of the al Shabaab terror group attacked five vehicles some of which were carrying at least 200 passengers at the intersection of Lamu and Tana River counties.
