Tensions are rising in Mt Elgon ahead of the 2027 elections after parliamentary hopeful Patrick Chemosit alleged he was assaulted by the current MP, Fred Chesebe Kapondi, in a shocking weekend incident.
Chemosit claims he was attacked on Saturday while on his way home from a burial in Sacho village. According to him, the incident occurred at Kapkateny, where his vehicle was intercepted by individuals believed to be part of the MP’s entourage.
Describing the ordeal, Chemosit alleges that Kapondi exited his car, brandished a firearm, and directed a group of about 15 men whom he described as armed with crude weapons to physically assault him.
“I was ambushed, and they beat me without mercy. I suffered serious injuries to my head,” Chemosit stated.
His driver, Francis Kiboi, was also reportedly injured, sustaining wounds to his left hand. Both Chemosit and Kiboi were treated at Bungoma Hospital following the attack.
Chemosit, who has declared his intention to challenge Kapondi in the upcoming 2027 parliamentary race, says he now fears for his life and is calling on authorities to take action.
As of now, Kapondi has not publicly responded to the allegations. The incident adds to growing political tensions in the region, with observers warning that violence must not be allowed to take root in the run-up to the polls.
