Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has declared that the Muslim vote will play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking at an Iftar dinner in Upper Hill on March 19, 2025, Junet emphasized the growing influence of the Muslim community in Kenya’s political landscape.

“As Muslims, we are ready. In this country, our numbers have significantly increased. The upcoming election will be shaped by the Muslim vote because it is now a powerful voting bloc,” Junet stated in Swahili.

He further hinted that the community would soon produce candidates for top political seats, including the presidency and deputy presidency.

“The Muslim vote is significant, and it won’t be taken for granted. Some think they have the numbers, but they should wait and see when votes are cast,” he added.

Junet also urged former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to consider converting to Islam, citing his long-standing support for the Muslim community.

“You have stood with the Muslim community for a long time, and your love for us is evident. We pray that you convert to Islam so that in the next Ramadhan season, you break the fast with us as a Muslim,” Junet remarked.

During the event, Raila surprised Muslim leaders and attendees by revealing that he has been reading the Quran for years.

He further moved the audience by fluently listing the Five Pillars of Islam, demonstrating his deep understanding of the faith:

  1. Shahadah – Declaration that Allah is the only God and Muhammad is His prophet.
  2. Salah – Performing five daily prayers while facing Mecca.
  3. Zakat – Giving alms to the poor.
  4. Saum – Fasting during the month of Ramadhan.
  5. Hajj – Pilgrimage to Mecca for those who are able.

Mining and Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho reaffirmed Raila’s strong relationship with the Muslim community, stating that it spans decades.

“There is a serious historical background of our relationship with Raila Odinga that not everybody can understand,” Joho noted.

With the 2027 elections drawing closer, political alliances are taking shape, and Junet’s remarks signal a potential shift in voting dynamics as the Muslim community seeks to assert its political influence.
