President William Ruto on Thursday oversaw the swearing-in of Geoffrey Ruku and Hanna Wendot Cheptumo as Cabinet Secretaries for Public Service and Gender, respectively, at State House, Nairobi. Their entry into the Cabinet comes as part of a broader restructuring of the executive, following recent changes to key dockets.

The appointments follow the reassignment of former Attorney General Justin Muturi, who previously held the Public Service portfolio. Ruku and Cheptumo were vetted by the National Assembly’s Committee on Appointments earlier this week, during which they were questioned on their records in public service and their preparedness to lead sensitive sectors.

The reshuffle did not end with the Cabinet. In a gazette notice dated April 16, President Ruto also named 14 new Principal Secretaries across various ministries. While the State has not officially disclosed the reasons behind the shake-up, the appointments are widely seen as part of efforts to reposition the administration and address emerging governance and performance gaps.

The changes come at a time when the government is under pressure to improve service delivery amid economic challenges and growing public scrutiny.

The President’s latest appointments reflect an ongoing effort to recalibrate his administration, with fresh faces and experienced hands expected to drive reforms in key areas of public service.
