Police officers in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County have arrested a New Zealand athlete with an illegal firearm and other weapons.
Zane Robertson, 33, was apprehended on Wednesday evening in possession of an unlicensed AK47 rifle with 23 rounds of ammunition in Kapsio.
According to Keiyo North sub-county police commander Tom Makori, it is believed that the illegal gun was linked to incidents of insecurity in Keiyo North.
His arrest reportedly came about after a woman reported the athlete, accusing him of sexual assault.
Police went to his house to apprehend him for questioning on the claims, but the suspect reportedly declined to open the doors.
“After they gained entry, they discovered that he was in possession of a gun.”
Apparently, the athlete has been living in Kenya for years and even built a home for himself.
The foreigner is expected in court today (Thursday).
“We will seek more time to conclude investigations,” the police boss added.
