Deputy president Rigathi Gachagua today hosted team Kenya who participated in the Special Olympics games held in Berlin, Germany recently.The luncheon was held at his Official Residence in Karen, Nairobi.
The DP lauded the team for flying Kenya’s flag high and bagging 25 medals in total. The deputy president expressed the government’s support to not just athletics but the sports fraternity in its entirety.
The DP urged parents of children with intellectual disability to give the children the opportunity to participate in the Special Olympics emphasizing on the importance of discovering their skills, talents, and abilities. He also encouraged the society to embrace children with intellectual disability and end condemnation of the group.
The DP promised to liaise with the relevant stakeholders to push for amendment of some sections of the penal code which he termed repugnant and demeaning.
The DP was joined by the spouse Pastor Dorcas Rigathi who had accompanied the team to Berlin as the Patron. She extended her gratitude to the coaches saying they played an invaluable role in nurturing the athletes. She appealed to Kenyans to end stigmatisation and called on them to support people living with disability.
Her Excellency promised to visit all the counties in the country to provide a platform for children with intellectual disability to be recognised and involved.
