Kakamega town came to a near standstill on Saturday following a confrontation between security forces and a large group of youths accompanying Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Leader Cleophas Malala and Nyandarua Senator John Methu.
The day began with high energy and anticipation as thousands of enthusiastic supporters gathered at Amalemba estate, just outside the town, to receive the two leaders. The mood was festive as the crowd prepared to escort the political duo into the heart of Kakamega.
However, tensions flared when law enforcement officers, already stationed at key access points, blocked the group’s entry into town. What started as a peaceful procession quickly devolved into chaos as police attempted to disperse the crowd, firing teargas and engaging in running battles with the youth.
In a dramatic turn, officers reportedly lobbed teargas canisters into Malala’s vehicle before deflating one of its tyres. The incident forced the DCP leader to flee the scene on a motorbike as tensions escalated.
For hours, the town witnessed a standoff between police and the determined supporters, with skirmishes breaking out as the youth sought alternative routes into the town center. Businesses remained closed and traffic disrupted as the situation unfolded.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the incident, which has raised concerns over the increasing politicization of security operations.
