A police officer was stabbed to death in Embakasi, Nairobi, following a dispute over land. Constable Nelson Momanyi, attached to the General Service Unit at Embakasi B Campus, reportedly got into a heated argument with a man known to him in the Mradi area at about 9 p.m. The confrontation turned violent, with the assailant stabbing the officer in the chest. Momanyi was rushed to hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The attacker fled the scene and is being pursued as police launch a murder investigation.
The tragic incident came as the police service grappled with a series of other misfortunes across the country. In Mandera County, six officers were seriously injured after the vehicle they were traveling in crashed along the Olla-Rhamu Road. The officers were part of Governor Mohamed Khalif’s escort team on September 7 when their Land Cruiser hit a bump at Barwaqo area and overturned, throwing them out of the open vehicle. They sustained multiple injuries and were rushed to hospital, while three of their colleagues who were in the same vehicle escaped unharmed.
Elsewhere in Taita Taveta County, another officer was injured in a hit-and-run incident along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. The officer, who was on patrol near Ikanga, was struck by a speeding lorry that did not stop after the collision. He was rushed to hospital for treatment and later discharged. Police have since launched a manhunt for the lorry involved.
The series of incidents highlight the dangers officers continue to face both in the line of duty and in personal disputes, as investigations into each case continue.
