A routine inspection in Thika town turned deadly when a police officer attached to the Special Police Intercept and Verification (SPI) Unit was fatally shot during what should have been a standard stop of a boda boda rider.
The officer, whose identity remains undisclosed pending notification of next of kin, was among four colleagues conducting patrols when they flagged down a motorcyclist for lacking a unique registration code a mark used to identify legitimate operators within the town. What began as a simple check quickly escalated into a confrontation. Eyewitnesses say a heated exchange ensued between the rider and the officer. Then, without warning, the rider reportedly pulled out a firearm and opened fire.
Panic broke out. The officer’s colleagues initially fled the scene in shock before regrouping and returning to assist. The wounded officer was rushed to Thika Nursing Home but tragically succumbed to his injuries en route.
Authorities confirmed that the assailant fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Speaking on the matter, police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga noted that officers swiftly launched an investigation, aided by members of the public.
“Our officers are following critical leads to identify and apprehend the suspect behind this heinous act,” said Nyaga. He also thanked members of the public for stepping forward with information and urged anyone else with helpful details to come forward, either by reporting to the nearest police station or using the national toll-free lines.
In a statement expressing sorrow, the police extended condolences to the bereaved family and pledged to pursue justice. “We deeply regret this loss and offer our heartfelt sympathies. The service remains committed to dismantling criminal networks that threaten the safety of Kenyans,” Nyaga said.
The incident has sent shockwaves through Thika and drawn attention once again to the dangers faced by police officers during seemingly routine duties. As investigations continue, the public has been called upon to stand in solidarity with law enforcement in rooting out threats from within the community.
